The Forest Lagoon: rejuvenate mind, body and soul in the North of Iceland
Opened in 2022, the Forest Lagoon is a bespoke geothermal pool using the healing powers of the natural steam baths in the surrounding of Iceland ́s Northern Capital: Akureyri. Surrounded in the calming birch tree forest of Vaðlaskógur, enjoy an out of this world scenery over the Eyjafjörður fjords, Akureyri and the mountains.
A unique experience of the healing powers of the geothermal springs. Soak in a natural pool, listen to the bubbling hot spring in the steam rooms and saunas and experience local baked goods at the cafeteria.
Did you know?
Rejuvenating bathing experience.
One interesting wellness fact about Iceland is that geothermal water is widely used for relaxation and therapeutic purposes.
Iceland is known for its natural hot springs, such as the famous Blue Lagoon, where the water is rich in minerals like silica and sulfur, which can have a range of benefits for the skin and body. In addition to visiting hot springs, Icelanders also frequently take advantage of the country's many public swimming pools, which are heated with geothermal energy and often include hot tubs and saunas for further relaxation.
This focus on using geothermal water for wellness is a longstanding tradition in Iceland and is believed to have numerous health benefits, from reducing stress and muscle tension to promoting better sleep and circulation.
Meet the locals.
Kjartan Sigurðsson, CEO at the Forest Lagoon/Skógarböðin, Akureyri.
How would you describe your unusual office? What is unique about my office must be the breathtaking view I have over Eyjafjörður, the fjord where we are located. The view has everything you need to get your mind right at any point in the day, it is a combination of the ocean, mountains, trees, and the city of Akureyri.
What is the first thing you do at work when starting your day?I am usually one of the first people to show up at the office, so the first thing I do is to walk around the place to take it all in, before the workday starts. It gives me great inspiration for the day ahead.
Tell us something we do not know about the Forest LagoonOne thing people maybe do not know about the Forest Lagoon is that there would not be a lagoon here if it wasn’t for some surprises that happened when workers were digging road tunnels through Vaðlaheiði, the mountain next to us. The workers accidentally hit a stream of hot water coming through the mountain. For a few years this stream ended up in the ocean next to the tunnel, and it wasn’t until the owners of the Forest Lagoon saw an opportunity to use the water, it came to some use. The Forest Lagoon was built in a little bit over a year after the idea came up.
Give our guests 3 reasons to convince them to book a trip up North to Akureyri and off course visit the Forest LagoonEvery place in Iceland has something unique about it. Here in the North, it is the closeness to all aspects of what mother nature has to offer: the ocean, the mountains, the forests, the highlands, and so forth. The North also is less explored than the South so there are a lot of opportunities for people to take the road less travelled and see something others have not seen before, like the Forest Lagoon. Which is the third reason you should visit the North; The Forest Lagoon is a magical place inside the Vaðlaheiði forest. A place where people come to experience something they will not experience anywhere else.
Our Staff - Kristín Magnúsdóttir
In conversation with HL Adventure ´s CFO:
Kristín Magnúsdóttir.
Each month, we want to introduce a member of the HL Adventure team through several elaborate questions, along with highlighting their talent and passion for the travel industry.
This month we sat down with HL Adventure´s CFO Kristín, to hear her insight on what´s on the horizon for HL Adventure as well as the qualities that make her an asset to the HL Adventure´s Team.
- Tell us a bit about your role at and your professional journey before becoming the CFO at HL Adventures.
I have a master’s degree from Copenhagen Business School and have been working with Finance and Accounting most of my Career in several companies in different fields of work. I have been working in the Travel Industry for the last 12 years and became a part of the HL Team in February 2020 - Which part of Iceland have you visited recently that you’d recommend to travellers?
I think I have to say Akureyri, the “Capital of North Iceland”. and the largest town outside the southwest corner of Iceland. The town is very charming with its own Culture, a lot of museums, good restaurants and if you like to go skiing Hlíðarfjall above Akureyri is one of the best skiing areas in Iceland. The town is also very well located if you want to see what the northern part of Iceland has to offer. - What is the most satisfying element of working with the HL Adventure Community as a CFO ?
I am very happy to be a part of the HL Team which is very ambitious and you can feel that every member, no matter what role they have is always doing their best to create unique experiences for the Client. - What is one thing you can’t travel without? [in Iceland]
I always take my hiking boots with me. When traveling around Iceland you can always find an opportunity to take a short hike and explore the neighbourhood, see something new and enjoy the beautiful unspoiled nature.
